Council Pursuing Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Funding for Rifle Creek
The Middle Colorado Watershed Council (MCWC) is working with a variety of stakeholders on plans to improve the quality of waters in the Rifle Creek watershed, including east, middle, and west Rifle Creek and Government Creek. Studies indicate that the voluntary installation of best management practices could provide a net environmental benefit for water users, downstream fisheries, and wildlife. If funded, the monies will be used in a cost-share arrangement with participating entities. For more information on program elements or to partner in the effort, inquire here. Riparian Restoration Workshop Follow-Up
The MCWC, in partnership with the Tamarisk Coalition, Garfield County, and the South Side and Mount Sopris Conservation Districts, organized a multi-day program for the community to engage around riparian restoration opportunities in the watershed.
Two Glenwood Springs High School classes were visited by restoration professionals in the classroom to learn about riparian area ecology, function, impacts from invasives, and basic principles of restoration. This was followed by two afternoons on Mamm Creek trying out the restoration techniques first hand. Land owners, managers and watershed enthusiasts gathered for a half-day workshop in Silt to exchange information on riparian restoration issues specific to the middle Colorado River and to discussed riparian restoration planning and implementation at a watershed scale. Employment with the Council
The Board is currently advertising for a part-time Outreach and Education Coordinator. It is also exploring the possibility of hiring a full-time Environmental Steward through the AmeriCorps program. Watch our website for more information. Upcoming Meetings/Events of Interest
