Listening with empathy that is, "the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another," according to Dictionary.com.
Listening to understand how the information someone is sharing with you impacts the speaker rather than listening from our own ego-centric perspective, which is how the information being shared impacts us, the listener.
