NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Komal Paladugu, National Student Secretary

Unsure of what to do with my summer between MS1 and MS2, I set out with mixed advice from older and wiser students ranging from "absolutely do research" to "enjoy your last real summer".  I chose to visit my native country of India. I took the opportunity to visit hospitals, follow surgeons, discuss healthcare issues with doctors, and see how medicine was practiced outside the United States.  More importantly, I was impressed by speaking to children, who frequently approached me inquiring how they too could become doctors. These young children made me reflect on the concept of a role model.  Having these interactions has made me realize that all of us as a whole - AMWA members and medical students - are all role models.  Whether or not we consciously act in such a manner, our actions thus far have made us members of a community through which we are obligated to offer our services.  This may be through casually interacting with a young child or through working fervently to change the world through AMWA.  I urge you all to take advantage of your unique role and to take this opportunity as AMWA members take the opportunity to get involved! Any ideas for improvement? Feel free to contact me!

National Chair Update
By Lauren Nicholls, Program Chair

AMWA has a lot of excitement in the Programs department! Two programs I'd like to share are the Bed & Breakfast Program and the Faces of AMWA Initiative:
  • The Bed & Breakfast Program provides overnight hosting to AMWA members who are travelling for residency interviews, fellowship interviews, or scientific meetings. This free program helps members minimize interview costs, learn about the community surrounding their potential program, and access the unique knowledge and experiences of local AMWA members and advocates. Hosts from the student, resident, and physician divisions of AMWA and other AMWA supporters have all come together to strengthen the AMWA community.  Learn more about the program and how to become a host here!
  • Faces of AMWA is an online exhibition to chronicle notable AMWA members past and present.  We are currently looking for student writers for Faces of AMWA.  If you are interested in writing a one page biographical document for this initiative please click for information on submission and credit for article authorship.  Entries will be published by AMWA on our website and students will receive recognition at the AMWA Annual Meeting.
If you are interested requesting a host for the Bed and Breakfast program or have any questions regarding Faces of AMWA, please feel free to email me!

Regional Event Spotline
Region 3: Bra Ball Initiative

This spring, George Washington’s founding AMWA branch president saw an article on CNN about a group of Americans working to give women rescued from sex trafficking in Mozambique a means of supporting themselves so that they would be less vulnerable to being re-trafficked. The group discovered that reselling used bras was significantly more profitable for these women than unskilled physical labor or other forms of employment. The organization Free the Girls evolved from this project. The organization ships bras to local groups of women in Mozambique and have recently expanded to several other countries. The GW AMWA chapter collected bras at their recent mentorship potluck dinner and held a week-long bra drive. Thanks to the efforts of their AMWA leaders, all of the MD classes, and MPH and PA students, they will be sending 198 bras to Free the Girls! For more information about this fabulous organization or to set up your own bra drive, check out Free the Girls.
