Volunteer Spotlight: Andrew Horstman

Andrew Horstman is one of CLC’s longest serving volunteer attorneys. Andy is Vice President and Senior Legal Counsel for intellectual property litigation at Medtronic, Inc. He has been with Medtronic since 2004 and was previously a trial attorney with Robins Kaplan. Over the years he has been extremely generous with his time, energy and resources, representing CLC clients since 1998 and also serving a term on CLC’s board of directors. He is currently representing three clients, and has represented 17 other clients in the past.

Andy has handled some particularly tough cases. In one case, he represented a 14-year old boy who had experienced years of brutal physical abuse and who, when very young, had witnessed his father kill his mother. At first, the boy was fearful and reluctant to say anything against his father. In time, Andy gained his client’s trust and the boy was able to voice his concerns about contact with his father. Andy made sure that the court restricted visitation and phone contact with the father. Andy ensured also that the court ordered therapy for the boy to address his extensive trauma history, although the father’s attorney argued against it.

In a more recent case, Andy represented two girls who were the eldest of five siblings in foster care. Andy always made sure that the court knew that the siblings wanted to stay together. The five siblings were recently all adopted together.

In every case, Andy takes the time to get to know his clients, connecting with and truly listening to them. We are so grateful for Andy's longtime commitment to CLC and are proud to have him on our team.

DW's Success Story

DW was a young girl when she was removed from her mother’s home. Although she was adopted, she and her brother were later removed from the adoptive home while a younger sibling remained. She then spent much of high school in an unstable foster home before landing in the home of a loving and stable foster parent her senior year. During all of these transitions, DW’s CLC attorney remained the only constant as DW’s social worker, guardian ad litem, and foster parent all changed (in some cases more than once). From helping DW locate the resources needed to live independently to filing the paperwork necessary to modify DW’s birth certificate to remove her adoptive parent’s name, her attorney worked with DW to make sure her voice was heard and her legal rights were protected. After graduating high school, DW is on track to graduate from college with a degree in Criminal Justice—all while working nearly full time. She has become a self-reliant young woman through her resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to a better life.
