Vancouver Public Space Network launches "Last Candidate Standing"

Eclectic, informative and entertaining, with musicians and a gong, this is not your typical election event.

Vancouver, BC - On Sunday, November 2nd, the Vancouver Public Space Network presents Last Candidate Standing - a unique civic election event open to all candidates running for mayor and council. Previous editions (in 2008 and 2011) featured dozens of candidates and packed audiences.

Last Candidate Standing is an election ‘mixer.’ It allows incumbents and new nominees, independents and party-affiliated candidates to share the same stage, answer questions, and showcase their political chops. Candidates are encouraged to register their participation with the VPSN. The names of participants will be announced at a later date.

The event is hosted by our lively MC Mark Busse, Industrial Brand partner & managing director, and features the Panel of Inquisition members: Emily Jackson of Metro News, CTV News reporter Jon Woodward and Jackie Wong, UBC/Megaphone Magazine. It’s eclectic, informative and entertaining. There’s a house band, musical interludes from The New Shackletons and a gong.

It’s most certainly not your typical election debate.

The intent has always been to turn the election debate (a limited number of candidates, a formula that varies little, well-rehearsed talking points) on its head – while having a bit of fun in the process. There’s a diversity of candidates running for office – each with their own ideas about the future of the city. Last Candidate Standing aims to provide a forum in which as many of these ideas – and the personalities behind them - can be showcased.

The 2014 edition of Last Candidate Standing is produced by the Vancouver Public Space Network with the gracious support of SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement, and Urbanarium Society.
