New Sign Graces the Gilley Sculptor Don Rambadt was on-site at the end of October to install the Museum's new sign. Interpreting the Gilley logo, he fabricated an arc of three migrating Long-billed Curlews. For years visitors have been delighted by two of his sculptures which frame the walkway to the Museum entrance.
Rambadt says he enjoys the challenge of manipulating space in sculpture and is fascinated by birds, his preferred subject. The intersection between the woodcarving tradition of Wendell Gilley and the forging of metal by Don Rambadt highlights the Museum's mission to celebrate the connections between people, nature, and art.

One Day Goldfinch Carving Workshop Carver Steve Valleau is leading a workshop on Sunday, November 20 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Museum. Participants will carve and paint a hanging ornament of the bright yellow and black American Goldfinch.
The workshop is open to both beginning and experienced carvers; children 11 and up are welcome with an adult. While sculpting this cheerful bird, attendees will find that they can enhance both their artistic and naturalist skills. Participants look closely at references, including photographs and mounts, as they recreate the shape and plumage of this colorful finch.
Pre-registration is needed to participate in the workshop. Cost is $25 for Wendell Gilley Museum members and $30 for non-members. Tools may be borrowed during the workshop or purchased in the Museum gift shop. Email, call 207-244-7555 or stop by to register. |
Razorbills Take ShapeStudents in the Saturday afternoon carving class are working on elegant Razorbills. These carvings will be on display during the annual Holiday Open House on December 11.
