This Shabbos, Shira and I are away as we attend the Yavneh Middle School Shabbaton in Huntington Beach. In my stead we have a more then able team. The Drasha this week will be given by Dr. Rabbi Ernie Agatstein. Seudah Shlishit will be led by Rabbi Jacob Rupp who is a beloved campus Rabbi at UCLA. Stay warm and stay close by as we present our February-April program schedule this coming week.

*Jacob Rupp has served for close to a decade as a popular campus rabbi with the Jewish Awareness Movement at UCLA. He has been privileged to teach, mold, and inspire hundreds of young Jewish college students, through giving classes, learning one on one, and hosting lively Shabbos meals with his wife and kids.
Jacob was born and raised in the Bay Area, holds a bachelors in history from the University of California, San Diego, and a bachelors in Talmudic law from Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem. He received his smicha from R' Zalman Nechemia Goldberg, the former Av Beis Din of Jerusalem. He is a certified health coach and wine importer. He is passionate about fitness, positively influencing others, history, music, politics, business, fine spirits, and constantly trying to be the a better father and husband.

Bolt of Inspiration -  Lay Me Down

This week’s reading, Vayechi, is a parsha of transition. It is a parsha that explores how we say goodbye and how we charge the next generation. Before Yaakov passes on he tells Yosef “vShachavti im avosai” “and I will lie with my fathers.”  This is a unique way to refer to death. What message was Yaakov trying to convey? When somebody leaves this world, we lose the energy, talents, and gifts that are associated with them. They may leave behind a legacy but the living embodiment of what spawned the legacy is no longer. Yaakov was teaching his children that with his passing, it’s not just him that they are going to lose, but also Avraham and Yitzchak. With Yaakov departing it is the end of an era. The end of the period we call dor ha’avos, the generation of the fathers. What Avraham stood for, what Yitzchak stood for, those values in their pure unadulterated form will be gone. Rav Moshe Feinstein takes this idea one step further. This is why Yaakov was so nervous to send Binyamin ahead. If anything should happen to Binyamin, he not only loses Binyamin but loses the legacy of his wife Rachel and his most beloved Yosef. Those that have connected themselves to their roots, when they leave, they don’t leave alone, they leave with the generation that got them here.
