We close out the year with "fireworks" and get ready for 2022

Memphis Japan Festival

Happy New Year

While this year certainly wasn’t a normal one, we do have a lot to be grateful for. This year, we saw the return of live events, including our favorite Japanese Festivals in St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri. We also traveled to Tennessee, where we participated in the Memphis Japan Festival celebrations for the first time!

Our studio-based taiko classes also resumed this year. We've had an enthusiastic group of students with a range of experience levels, all ready to play. The fall session wrapped up this month with a recital for family and friends. Joined by a few performing members, our students performed Hanabi, which means “fireworks.” With its swingy rhythm and energetic choreography, it’s a favorite piece and we are so impressed with how much our students learned. Great job everyone!

Community Group Recital

Now, we look ahead to the New Year and continuing to share our love of taiko with the community. We thank you for all your support and encouragement throughout the year, and we can’t wait to see you in 2022. We wish you a safe, happy, and healthy New Year!

Looking for a new activity to try in the coming year? Our Adult All-Levels Class resumes in January! The 10-week session is open to anyone age 16 and up who wants to play taiko - no experience is required. Beginners will learn the basics of sticking, kata (form), movement, theory, and rhythms of taiko. More advanced players will learn different styles, rhythms, and drums. By the end of the session, you will have learned some pieces you can play, including music from our own repertoire.

In addition to the benefits of good exercise that taiko provides, it helps improve self-awareness, rhythm, and concentration. It can also relieve stress and is a lot of fun!
